The History Of
Roberts Radio Roberts radio was
founded in 1932 by Harry Roberts and Leslie Bidmead in
Hill Place, London. By 1935 Roberts Radio was producing an average
of 8 radios a week. These radios were of the suitcase design with a loudspeaker and frame
Arial in the lid.
In 1937 Roberts Radio Launched the M4Q
which was a complete change in design. As well as taking up less table space
than the suitcase models it was also cheaper to
construct bringing the average price down from 11gns to 9gns. On 23rd April 1937 Roberts
Radio became a private Limited Company.
In 1941 the company moved to East Molesey in Surrey as
London had became a hazardous place due to the bombing. It was during the war years that
Harry Roberts got a phone call from his contact in Harrods informing him that Her Majesty
the Queen had purchased a Roberts Radio for her personal use, this was in fact the second
Roberts radio she had purchased, the fist one was a present for Princess Elizabeth. |
|
A pleasant
reminder that the Warrant was no mere formality came in January
1957 when Harry Robert was requested to take to Buckingham place
samples of the current range of portable radios for a
demonstration to Prince Charles and Princess Anne .
Two further Royal Warrants were granted in 1982 and
1985.

Today Roberts Radio still manufacture the same
high quality hand made radios from a new factory in
Mexborough, South Yorkshire. However they have now extended there
range to include high quality short wave radios,
small pocket radios and radio cassette players

Roberts Radio has continued to lead the way with
high quality radios into the New Millennium with its range of DAB Radios
(Digital Audio Broadcasting). Roberts Launched its first DAB radio in
March 2000, however it never reached the High Street as DAB coverage was
too sparse to justify paying its £800 price tag and the radio had no
analogue tuner. After continued research and development and improved
signal coverage Roberts Radio launched a completely new range of DAB
Digital radios in 2003 - 2004. These radios are packed full of practical
features, and offer unbeatable sound quality and programme choice. For
more details please see Roberts Digital
Radios
Pictured below is the Roberts Radio (digital) flagship
featuring Pause Plus rewind and record feature plus MP3 playback from the
SD card. Roberts Radio has
certainly come a long way from the AC6 that they released in 1933
